Christmas season begins in local Surrey theatres

November has arrived, the lights are in place on local high streets and the countdown to Christmas is underway. It is the season for magic, joy and the imagination and the theatre is the perfect mix of all three, guaranteed to put you in the festive mood.

Surrey has an incredible choice of theatres across the county with a wide range of shows to suit every taste, budget and age range. Whether you are going out with family or friends, the local theatres showcase varied performances and impressive talent, each promising an unforgettable night (or day!) out.

Leatherhead Theatre

Pantomimes are the ultimate Christmas indulgence and where better to see one than at Leatherhead’s Grade II listed theatre, just off the main high street.

This year’s pantomime is Sleeping Beauty where you get the chance to see talented local children acting alongside the professionals. With Knights, Princesses, Queens and names like “Naughtybottom” children will be whisked into a magical, hilarious and fun-filled world.

Sleeping Beauty runs from Friday 20th December to Monday 30th December 2019.

Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford

The YA theatre in the heart of Guildford is one of the country’s best regional theatres, with many shows moving on to the West End. There are slightly more highbrow plays on offer, from the well-known tale of Frankenstein to the more recent tragedy of The Lovely Bones.

So, if you are looking for a more traditional play for the family this Christmas then why not watch The Night Before Christmas, a story that is almost 200 years old. This performance will provide children with an age-old tale alongside catchy songs and audience participation.

The Night Before Christmas runs from Saturday 21st December to Thursday 26th December 2019.

Epsom Playhouse

If you have young children, like most parents you know how short their attention span can be. If you are looking for a show that captures the imagination of 2-7 year olds, then this 45 minute interactive performance is perfect. Audience participation is encouraged, and each child receives a gift from Father Christmas himself at the end. Photo opportunities galore and plenty of fun along the way.

Santa’s Christmas Countdown runs from Saturday 7th December to Tuesday 24th December 2019. (Also showing at other theatres across Surrey).

Rose Theatre, Kingston

Hans Christian Anderson’s magical and enchanting tale of The Snow Queen is coming to Kingston’s Rose Theatre this December. The production is set to be captivating, spellbinding and highly professional.

The theatre itself is set by the river within short walking distance to its delightful Christmas market, so why not make your evening complete by visiting both.

The Snow Queen runs from Friday 6th December to Sunday 5th January.

Electric Theatre, Guildford

If you are looking for something a little more risqué this year, then head to the Electric Theatre for a more unique and vibrant take on traditional performances.

If singing along never fails to get you into the Christmas spirit, check out “Never Mind the Baubles, Here’s The Dirty Carols.” With its ridiculously rude and fun take on traditional songs, you might have to watch your words when singing along with the family this year.

A Festive Evening of Burlesque is definitely not a family choice with its over 18 show. With burlesque, vaudeville, circus acts and drag acts, this is a complete alternative to a traditional Christmas outing with a different kind of magic in the air!

“Never Mind the Baubles, Here’s The Dirty Carols”: Friday 6th December 2019
Hundred Watt Club: A Festive Evening of Burlesque: Saturday 14th December
